What is the easiest way to make a belly dance bra?

Jennifer Secrist Goran, director of Tribe Nawaar Belly Dance Company in Boulder, COThe simplest way to make a gorgeous well-fitted belly dance bra is to start with your favorite lingerie bra as a base. You will want use a bra that is sturdy enough to hold up to the decorations you will be adding. We like to use padded bras as they hold up well to the weight of the metal adornments, like beads, buttons and coins. Avoid thin fabric bras or bras that use silicone or other liquids as padding. Demi cups are often preferred as full cups can look oversized when adorned with lots of baubles.

Once you have your bra base chosen you will want to replace the ties with with either halter or ring ties. Leaving standard lingerie straps is not recommended (they are considered by many to look unprofessional and ruin the mystique with the audience)

What ties are best for making your belly dance bra?

That is a bit of a personal preference. Some of our dancers prefer the look of the halter ties while others prefer the distribution of weight that the ring ties offer.

Tribe Nawaar's Halter Ties For DIY Belly Dance Bras

Halter Ties

Classic halter style ties provide an open, uncluttered look on the back. Great for showing off all the muscle work used in our dance form.

Ring Ties

Cross back style ring ties help distribute the weight of breasts and bra to the shoulders and back. This can help ease neck pain associated with heavy belly dance bras in larger bust sizes.

What coins should I use for belly dance bras?

It depends a little on the look you want to create. There are many authentic coin options. Most of these have a nice patina. If you want them more antiqued or darker in tone there are many metal treatments you can apply, such as JAX Pewter Black. If you want to add more sparkle (not less) adding a few paillettes intermixed with your coins.

Most of our authentic coins come with a soldered loop for easy attachment. We like adding in coins from our dancer’s travels into each bra. You can do this yourself. You will need a vice, drill with metal drill bit and a file. We bet if you already have those tools you are probably pretty handy and able to tackle this next-level decorating task.

If you are doing a heavily coin-decorated bra you may want to at least intermix (or use exclusively) some of our more lightweight coins. These will make a huge difference in the overall weight of your bra. Definitely recommend this for our fuller busted dancers. They are a real neck and back saver.

How to decorate a belly dance bra

Tribe Nawaar's snow lace choli top, bra not included with choli purchase but we can custom make one for you! After you’ve created your base, the fun begins!

Many belly dancers simply adorn their bra with coins. We love adding a bit of a personal touch in with each bra, including some sentimental pieces from our personal stash. Maybe you have only one of a favorite earring pair, a favorite charm or pendant you want to incorporate?

Another fun tip is to use fabric backed anklets to line the top edge along the bust line and chained anklets with bells and baubles draped among your coins.

Additionally many of our anklets can be draped as belly drape (the accent that hangs down below the bra over the belly). Pendants attached to the center of a bra are classic finishing touches. If you use a pendant with dangly bits at the bottom it is great for helping showing off belly rolls and flutters
