Nine Heavens
Bridging the gap between traditional and modern world music with a medieval flavor. This double CD features one disc of electronic and one disc of acoustic versions of the tracks, revealing a complex body of work. Qadim
The intimate focus of a solo instrument has a long and honored tradition in the regions of the world explored on this recording. Middle Eastern dancers prize such pieces (often played in a free rhythm and known as a taqasim).
Qadim is an Arabic word referring to music performed in an 'old style', according to
traditional concepts. Indeed, 2 of the works on this CD are among the oldest known music to survive: a hymn to the Muse Calliopeia by Mesomedes, the court musician for the Roman Emperor Hadrian and a 3,500-year-old hymn to the moon goddess Nikkal, from Ugarit, and ancient city located in modern Syria. The other pieces are original compositions inspired by traditional music styles from a wide range of geographical locations. |

Rihla
In the medieval Islamic world, a rihla, or 'travelogue', was an account of a personal journey written to educate its readers about lands far away from their own. Often recounted by someone who had made the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, it derived ultimately from the Prophet Muhammad's direction to 'seek knowledge, even as far as China.' This led to the concept ofal-rihla fi talab al-'ilm, or travel in search of knowledge. This recording is a journey of thousands of miles and many centuries, into the heart of these remarkable music and dance traditions. |
